NIX SNAX PIX :: healthy alternatives for kids you love!

I recently asked Nik Tyler {writer for Discerning Brute} if he would write a guest blog post for PUREmamas. I said to him: If you were put in a room full of kids and had to feed them {nik style}, what would you make?

Here is what he came up with {THANKS NIK!!}:

Kids are great!! They're fun-loving, adventurous, inquisitive... and they are undoubtedly our future! Although I'm not a father yet, I do often think about what kind of dad I'll be one day, and I know that when I do have kids, I'll want to help them grow up into strong, healthy, well-informed adults. I know this is achievable by instilling alkalarian eating habits in them at an early age.
Looking back on my own childhood, I was very fortunate to have been raised as a vegetarian. I am certain that an intrinsic part of my adult identity (now a vegan for 7+ years) comes from the way I was taught by my parents to feed my body healthy, sustainable, plant-based foods and to have a deep respect, appreciation and love for all living creatures as well as our beautiful "Mother Earth".

So, as parents, we must ensure the well-being of the younger generation by guiding them in the right direction when it comes to health and nutrition. One sure way to do that is to serve natural veg snacks at home while teaching our children to avoid foods which either consist of sugar or break down into sugar during digestion.  Many of the serious health problems in adults are the end result of OD-ing on the acidic foods consumed during childhood. If you raise your children on the products advertised on TV (cookies, milk, sodas, cheeseburgers, pizza, etc. etc.) you could very well be weakening their immune systems, and allowing them to become more susceptible to illness. If instead, we offer our young children healthy (and tasty) alkalarian plant-based meals, their taste buds will develop craving those great foods.

Parents have the ability to give the greatest gift of all to their kids -  wisdom and health. So why not give your kids the gift of healthy food today? Guide them into a lifelong journey of smart food habits that will support a happy, healthy, long adult life!!

Here are three delicious and healthy snacks I would highly recommend you make for your kids (and their friends) when they get home from school today:

    ALKALINE AVOCADO SMOOTHIE

    2 avocados
    1 chopped cucumber
    1 bunch of spinach
1 handful of dill, cilantro, parsley
    1 Tbls lemon (juice)
    1 peeled lime (whole)
    chopped celery
1 teaspoon olive or hemp oil
    few cherry tomatoes
    1 Tbls hempseeds

    Directions:
Blend in Vitamix or blender. When smooth, pour into glass. Drizzle teaspoon of olive oil or hemp oil. Top with one cherry tomato and a teaspoon of hempseeds. Sprinkle some ginger, garlic and curry powder on top. Add a celery stick as a stirrer to mix.

    Enjoy the great green goodness!!

    GROOVY GREEN GUACAMOLE

    1-2 avocado
    1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
    1-2 cloves of garlic
    ¼ teaspoon sea salt
    ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
    1 teaspoon fresh oregano leaves

    Directions:

Combine all of the above-listed ingredients in a blender or food processor and puree.
Serve with sliced hikima, cucumber, red, yellow, green peppers or on a collard wrap!
    HAPPY n' HEALTHY HUMMUS WRAP

    2 cups of chick peas
    ⅔ cup water
    3 tabelspoons tahini
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    2 tablespoons lemon juice
    1-2 pressed cloves of garlic
    ½ teaspoon sea salt

    Directions:
Combine all of the above-listed ingredients in a blender or food processor and puree.
Serve with sliced avocado, hikima, cucumber, red, yellow, green peppers, cherry tomatoes on an Ezekeal 4:9 Sprouted Grain Tortilla!

I hope you and your kids enjoy these delectable and nutritious snacks!  Bon Apetite!

Passion fruit water is yet another youth serum. As passion fruit is full of vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and folate. These help your kidneys, nerves, muscles, and heart rhythm in big ways.
Your body uses Vitamins C to make blood vessels, cartilage, muscles, and collagen, which keeps skin looking young. It also helps your body heal, lowers inflammation, and protects your cells from damage. When you get enough vitamin C, it lowers your chances of getting colds and certain types of cancers. Vit A is great for eyes, immunity, and cells.
Note: did you know Passion Fruit is actually a berry? The biggest berry you’ll find.

If you’re not ready for change, you’re not rea
If you’re not ready for change, you’re not ready for change. And that’s perfectly ok.
Making healthy choices isn’t hard work. You “have time” to choose an apple over a bag of chips. Let’s be real here; you just DON’T WANT TO. And that alone is totally ok!!
Let’s not shame others choices or pressure another to change. If somebody is not happy where they’re at, or they are sick, or in pain, only then will they start examining their current routines and habits. Anger is a great catalysts for change. It often pushes people out if their comfort zones and into action.
I often hear “I don’t have time to be healthy”. But what that really means is I don’t want to change or I’m afraid of change. And I’m not ready. Change is what they’re nervous about - not the amount of time it takes to chop up vegetables.
Be kind to yourself…but be honest.
Notice what you say you desire (weightloss or more energy) and then really examine your habits. Do you make the choices a “thin” person makes? Do you make the choices a rested high energy person needs to make? This might seem obvious but it’s actually not…so often we overlook this gap. We don’t see it and then we get mad at ourselves. Punish ourselves for “failing” over and over again.
Once you start paying attention to your actions and habits and line them up with your goals - that’s when the magic happens.
Yay or nay?
