    Smoothie versus Juice? The Controversy

Some of the most common questions we get from readers is Buy a Juicer? Or buy a Vitamix? Which is better, smoothies or juicing? And today Meredith Baird and I are here to bust the myths and explain the difference between smoothies versus juice.

Meredith Baird is here sharing her current favorite smoothie recipe, Beyond Beautiful Berry Protein Smoothie, as well as to help clear up the smoothies versus juice debate:

"First off, they are completely different", Meredith says.

    Juice is a supplement.

The nutrients absorb easily because there is no fiber to slow them down. Because they absorb so quickly I prefer (and recommend) juices that are very low in fruit and sugar. Generally, juices aren't that filling.

    Smoothies are a meal.

They are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber.  Smoothies are a great way to combine fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins for a complete nutrient-dense experience. There is no right way to make a smoothie. Throw ingredients in that make you happy! This is my most frequent (and favorite) combination. You can't go wrong with the combination of berries and spinach- so nutritious!

Plus, Summer is on its way- and so are amazing smoothies! I don't know about you, but winter makes it really hard for me to get into smoothie mode. It might be because I live in Maine and frozen fruit seems counterintuitive in the winter (as it should!), or perhaps it is nice just to change it up a bit- either way, smoothies are an amazing way to really pack in the nutrition.

Here is my concoction, try it, and then experiment with your own.

Beyond Beautiful Berry Protein Smoothie Recipe

    Serves 2 Large Smoothies

    INGREDIENTS

2-3 Cups Frozen (or fresh) Berries - I always make sure that some blueberries make there way in!
1 Young Coconut- Meat and Water
1 Cup Brazil Nut Milk (or Nut Milk of your choice)
    2 Cups Spinach

    SUPPLEMENTS

    • Beaming Protein Powder - This is a proprietary blend of vegan protein made by or friends and colleagues at the Be Beaming cleanse squad in San Diego. I am LOVING it.
    • 1 Scoop Green Vibrance
    • 1 tablespoon Coconut Butter
    • Bee Pollen- *I like Bee Pollen on mine

*If you like it sweeter, add a date or a few drops of stevia.

    DIRECTIONS

Throw all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth! (It helps if you put the spinach and liquid in first!)

    Sip, Relax and Enjoy!

Looks delicious! I wish organic young coconuts were easier to find or I had a tree in my yard to sustain my love for them!

Butternutrition- you can totally make without the coconut meat if you want - just sub more nut milk for the coconut water- and add an extra scoop of coconut butter for the nutritional benefit!

Your berry green protein smoothie sounds so delicious! Love the inclusion of fresh brazil nut milk and coconut meat. I'm going to try it out with some Epic Protein, i think the Lucuma Vanilla flavor would work really well with the other flavors. Thanks!

Passion fruit water is yet another youth serum. As passion fruit is full of vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and folate. These help your kidneys, nerves, muscles, and heart rhythm in big ways.
Your body uses Vitamins C to make blood vessels, cartilage, muscles, and collagen, which keeps skin looking young. It also helps your body heal, lowers inflammation, and protects your cells from damage. When you get enough vitamin C, it lowers your chances of getting colds and certain types of cancers. Vit A is great for eyes, immunity, and cells.
Note: did you know Passion Fruit is actually a berry? The biggest berry you’ll find.

If you’re not ready for change, you’re not rea
If you’re not ready for change, you’re not ready for change. And that’s perfectly ok.
Making healthy choices isn’t hard work. You “have time” to choose an apple over a bag of chips. Let’s be real here; you just DON’T WANT TO. And that alone is totally ok!!
Let’s not shame others choices or pressure another to change. If somebody is not happy where they’re at, or they are sick, or in pain, only then will they start examining their current routines and habits. Anger is a great catalysts for change. It often pushes people out if their comfort zones and into action.
I often hear “I don’t have time to be healthy”. But what that really means is I don’t want to change or I’m afraid of change. And I’m not ready. Change is what they’re nervous about - not the amount of time it takes to chop up vegetables.
Be kind to yourself…but be honest.
Notice what you say you desire (weightloss or more energy) and then really examine your habits. Do you make the choices a “thin” person makes? Do you make the choices a rested high energy person needs to make? This might seem obvious but it’s actually not…so often we overlook this gap. We don’t see it and then we get mad at ourselves. Punish ourselves for “failing” over and over again.
Once you start paying attention to your actions and habits and line them up with your goals - that’s when the magic happens.
Yay or nay?
