If you haven't yet purchased my eRecipe book, you will not have seen this recipe. It's one I have been making for years but only recently have I perfected it.
Years ago, I lived in Santa Monica and would frequent a place called Houston's Steak House. Not only was I a health freak back then but I definitely didn't eat meat. It was, however, one of my all time favorite restaurants! Good ambiance. Great wine list. Amazing people watching but mainly I was obsessed with their homemade veggie burger. And if I asked for it, "California Style", they added avocado and arugula. It was to-die-for!
Because of my food allergies and sensitivities, I had asked a waitress who worked there for the ingredients. She basically told me: beans, rice, jalapeno and beets. I was stunned at how simple this burger was. But hmmmmmm, what were the measurements, what gave it the sweetness, etc.?
After months of playing around in my kitchen, I came up with something that succeeds my Houston's burger.
Hope you enjoy and have a great time making it! Let me know how your family likes it. My boys love it, too!
VEGAN BURGER PATTY RECIPE
{serves 4}
2 cups brown rice, cooked
2 cups, cooked black beans {or an 8oz can}
1 cup oat bran
1 ½ tspn chopped jalapeno pepper
2 tablespoon olive oil or grape seed oil
1 teaspoon honey or 2 dates
1 large beet or 2 small,, boiled or baked and skinned
1 tspn sea salt
Buns
Toppings and sauces of you choice: tomatoes, arugula, etc.
I chose a miso sauce, garlic sauce and mustard
Chop boiled beats into small pieces. Chop jalapeno and make sure pits are removed from dates. In a food processort mix everything listed above until brown rice and black beans are no longer whole. About 1 minute.
Mixture should be red in color, due to dates.
Heat skillet on low to medium. Lightly oil the pan, preferably with coconut or grape seed, but it's up to you.
Roll pattie dough in your hand. Flatten and put on skillet. Let cook/fry until golden brown, about 4 mintues on front and 6 on the back. Maybe longer due to pan and heat differences.
Toast buns and add all your favorite toppings.
Enjoy!
